Biography
American politician, considered by colleagues to be the most powerful and arrogant member of the U.S. House of Representatives. He was first elected 2/19/1964, followed by large vote re-elections. With a strong voice, he was known as an obnoxious bully, though highly competent in his job.
Burton's younger brother, John, was also a politician, a U.S. Congressman and a far-out liberal. Phil Burton earned his law degree in 1952. He married young and had one daughter.
Burton died of an embolism 4/10/1983, 1:44 AM, San Francisco, CA.
