Biography
Belgian athlete named Sportsman of the Year and given an Award of Merit, 1995. In 1996, he was the European swimming champion setting his first world record for the 100m breast stroke on 20 July 1996 in the Olympics preliminary round. He was the first Belgian to win an Olympic Gold Medal for the category.
At the Atlanta Olympics, 1996, he set a record in the 100 m. breasts stroke and the 200 m. breast stroke.
He is now retired from swimming and makes a living as a salesman. In 2008 Deburghgraeve was inducted in the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
