Swedish Artist Hilma af Klint Channels her Spirit Guides

by Agneta Borstein

Hilma af Klint, ca.
1901Born in Stockholm, Sweden on October 26, 1862, (no exact birth time) (1) abstract artist, Hilma af Klint requested in her will that her art not to be shown publicly until twenty years after her death. It would take forty-two years for the public to view her vibrant, mystical, some 10 x 8 feet tall paintings at Los Angeles County Museum of Art, in Los Angeles, California in November of 1986. She firmly stated that her art would not be understood by the public during her lifetime. The founder of the Anthroposophical Society, Rudolf Steiner, who rejected her ‘mystical’ art seemed to contribute to her decision not to show her paintings, named “Paintings for the Future” but to a few during her career. Ms. Klint attended the prestigious Royal Academy of Fine Art in Stockholm, Sweden early in her life.

Her natal 2º34” Sun and 5º23” Retrograde Mercury in Scorpio did not hide her art during her career as a fine artist painting pretty flowers, animals, and beautiful landscapes since that was the norm for a woman in the late 19th Century. However, her thirst for spirituality, mediumship, automatic writing, automatism, which includes messages from Spirit and her Guides; Amalie, Ananda, Clements, and Ester became her guides to seek answers about an unknown Universe. Hilma attended seances, in vogue during the beginning of the 20th Century, and was one of “The Five” that would gather for seance sessions for many years. Some of her paintings show astrological symbols, perhaps not an astrologer, but nevertheless a part of her expressive, large, and small paintings of symbols, swirls, and cataloged notes amounting to over 1300 paintings and 193 notebooks at her death in 1944.

Hilma af Klint never married or had children, her life partners were Anna who was part of “The Five”, and Thomasine who saved her art by buying them all! Her Moon and North Node conjunction in Sagittarius made her logical, yet her Scorpio Sun and Mercury conjunction made her systematic, precise, secretive, and, at time obsessive with a deep thirst for the metaphysics and the afterlife. The death of her sister in 1880, during Hilma’s first Nodal Return when she was around 18 years old, unlocked her determination of finding the truth through ‘logical’ means by channeling and understanding Universal Consciousness.

from the Swans seriesHer artistic abilities shine through her natal Saturn, Jupiter, and Venus in Libra, with a 20º12” trine toward her Uranus and Ketu in Gemini. Natal Mars and Neptune conjunction in Aries made her a strong pioneer during the intense channeled period from the age of forty-four through fifty-three. The first phase shows her abstract automatism of whimsical, abstract wording and freestyle drawings which were pure channeling starting in 1906, ending in 1915, birthing her channeling work, “Paintings for the Temple”. The initial automatism and channeling were transcribed into imaginative drawings with symbols, letters that are written in Swedish, some are unreadable words, something that Hilma was aware of.

Hilma’s drive with a 12º44” Moon in Sagittarius conjunct natal 16º50” North Node, and the 16º50” South Node in Gemini conjunct her natal 20º19” Uranus; the concept of her path of creating the unique, explorative and liberated expression of her mind as a visionary artist, she created “Paintings for the Future”. The 2018 exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City of Hilma af Klint’s mysterious and colorful paintings became the museum’s “most attended exhibition” (2)

Hilma af Klint's success in 2018

Guggenheim successAs we know, or so assume, departed Spirits might observe their own progress in their personal evolution, so, we will look at Hilma’s great success and observe the Transits and Solar Arc Progression (SA) at the opening of her Art exhibition in October of 2018 in New York City, U.S.A.

Transiting Jupiter in Scorpio conjunct SA (Solar Arc) 24º South Node before Jupiter moved into Sagittarius November 2018. In January of 2019, as the success of the Art Exhibit continues, Jupiter conjunct her natal Moon/North Node, Hilma’s visionary Essence was understood by thousands that would not comprehend her art during her lifetime. Transiting Nodal Axis in Leo/Aquarius squares her natal Sun and Mercury in Scorpio, which could imply that she is aware, and content of her personal evolution, but might have missed the experience of not being at Guggenheim in a physical form … SA Sun and Mercury in Aries opposes her natal Jupiter in Libra shows her growing Spirit (the Sun), and Mercury, (the Messenger) aware of these evolutionary times. Transiting Neptune opposes SA Mars, dissolving matters of gender roles, a female artist in a ‘new era’, a fighter for women’s rights, and forcing issues to the forefront.

Hilma af Klint's nine year journey with her spirit guides

begin channellingThe Transits and Solar Arc chart of Hilma’s journey intothe unknown in 1906, show her 16º SA Sagittarius Sun conjunct her natal 16º50” Sagittarius North Node. Without an exact birth time, we do not know what house this takes place, but we do know that this progression invites her to explore her subconscious Sun with her visionary North Node. Her Solar Arc Sun, that which she has grown to understand has now come to ‘meet’ her SA North Node, and is ready to translate what she feels, sees, experiences, and expresses through her supportive line-up of Spirit Guides.

Her natal Uranus and South Node in Gemini points has progressed to Leo, Uranus 4º and Aquarius South Node 1º, which creates a square to her natal Scorpio Sun and Mercury. Hilma prepared this artistic channeling endeavor for a whole year by fasting, praying, and making sure that her Guides would support her altered state of consciousness. Transiting Pluto in Gemini at 23º24” supported her metamorphic years of “leaving” her body with a SA Pluto at 24º Gemini. 01º SA Libra Mid-Heaven conjunct her natal Saturn in Libra the first year of this endurance and final success years later…

Hilma af Klint ends her channeling journey

end channelingBy 1915, Hilma ends her channeling journey and it is noticeable with a Transiting Nodal axis in Aquarius/Leo at 13º55” conjunct SA 13º51” Uranus. Transiting Uranus in Aquarius at 11º 44” is also conjunct her SA Nodal Axis within 1º. Note, during the end of this 9-year journey, the transiting Nodes ‘reverse’ their message, where, North meets South, and South meets North; she had completed her Churning Process of Creating “Paintings for the Future”. At times, referred to “Paintings for the Temple”, Hilma had envisioned a Temple with round steps up toward the Sky showing her art in a circular motion, synchronically the way Guggenheim’s museum is built!  Her Essence, and her desire of channeling as her SA Moon/North Node completes a deep spiritual desire with the transiting Leo Nodal Axis, and thus, the Eclipse season with various orbs affecting her SA points. Her natal chart does not have any Leo planets, but her legacy and success show through her spiritual growth, advancing to the Solar Arc planets in square to her natal Scorpio planets and Pluto in Taurus. The Eclipse Seasons in 1906 and 1915 are both in Leo/Aquarius and creates a square to her natal Scorpio Sun and Mercury. During her success at Guggenheim in 2019, transiting Nodes, and Eclipses were in Leo/Aquarius, both signs of creativity and unique visionaries.

Transiting Uranus in Aquarius in 1915, is in opposition to Hilma’s Leo/Aquarius SA Uranus/SA South Node, which implies her out-of-body years of channeling. Transiting Jupiter in Pisces creates a square to her pivotal natal Nodal Axis in Sagittarius and Gemini. Her Uranian personality, and nine years later of completing “Paintings for the Temple”, she left the world an outstanding collection of the ‘new era’, often defined as a “New Age”.Outstanding authors, creators, and many ‘ordinary’ individuals are in touch with their guides to support times of crisis, and periods of superb creativity. Carl Jung embraced his guide, Philemon, Alice Bailey, author of The Blue Books, (the Arcane School) channeled Djwal Khul, Shamans, indigenous tribes around the world invoke their support of assistants daily, and Hilma af Klint trusted her guides. Are you aware of yours?

In conclusion, in respect to the abstract contemporary painters in the beginning of the 20th Century, such as Kandinsky, Mondrian, and Kazimir, Hilma af Klint appears to separate from them due to her intentionally style of seeking answers of the unknown, through her channeling. Hilma was a superb landscape and portrait painter, but her quest for proof of the beyond, the intriguing and never-ending world of Spirit, might have been in vain. As we study her life and art in this 21st Century, her persistency of conquering Spirit, she left a legacy through her “Paintings for the Future”, which we have the honor to comprehend on a limited but a never-ending journey for our own quest of the unknown.

Hilma af Klint was convinced that reality was not confined to the physical world. Parallel to the material dimension there existed an inner realm the contents of which were as true and real as those of the outer world. To convey this message, Hilma af Klint employed dualistic symbols, letter, and words to express that “Everything is Unity”. (3)
